Welcome to my antique canes newsletter. The BADA Antiques & Fine Art
Fair at the Duke of York Square in London will soon be opening its doors.
This is one of the most prestigious antique fairs in Europe and will
feature over 100 members of the British Antique Dealers Association showing
their finest items.
I will be taking an exciting selection of walking sticks with the emphasis
on gadget canes, and extraordinary umbrellas.
There is an exciting program of events at this fair including a lecture
by the National Trust's Furniture Curator, whilst Dame Rosalind Savill will
be discussing the world of fake and genuine items in Sèvres porcelain.
Last, but by no means least, there is a loan exhibition from David Gainsborough
Roberts entitled "Heroes
or Villains" - David will tell us about the thrill of collecting
his important celebrity memorabilia display, and items will include Oscar
Wilde's cigarette case given to him by " Bosie" and Elvis Presley's
sapphire ring! Hmmm, I bet that last item might stretch the boundaries of
bourgeois taste!
If you have any special requests please email or
phone me on (+44) 077 404 35844. To request your ticket please click on the
button below. See you there!

Cross-Cultural
Symbolism of the Cane - The Rajastani Rat Pack
In my last newsletter I featured a studio photograph
of Sioux Chief Red Cloud proudly posing in native dress and sporting a Nineteenth
Century walking cane. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a similar image
but from the other side of the globe.
Please enjoy this portrait photograph
of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The bejewelled turban, the silken robes,
the air of authority and royal lineage are all set off by a silver-top cane,
louchely held in the left hand. We cannot escape the facts - this guy was
young, rich, stylish ... and he knew how to wear a cane.

The
Italian Job
It was my great pleasure to meet Luca Bolognese at the last international
cane conference, Canemania, in Paris. Who, I asked myself, is the intriguing-looking
gentleman in the lilac trilby, dark glasses and sporting a curiously-wrought
plastic walking stick?
I just had to introduce myself to Luca who, besides
being possibly the most stylish man inItaly (no mean feat in itself), designs
and produces a fascinating range of contemporary canes. Words fail me in
any attempt to describe the amazing style of these "off the wall" canes.
I note from Luca's website (www.gautcontemporarycanes.com) that words
do not fail him, however!
I am sure you will enjoy these pictures of Luca's
canes on display in a fashion show in Trieste. How delightfully Italian!
Can you imagine a similar event being staged in the open air in Manchester
or Bristol? I thought not. Please note that Luca is the guy wearing the
sunglasses, red kaftan with white harem pants and matching head scarf...
