Welcome to my Antique Canes NewsLetter - and be aware that we are fast approaching our premier event in the antique calendar. As the first hopeful signs of summer emerge, we look forward to the start of the London season by visiting the London International Fine Art Fair at Olympia. The fair has been given an enhanced and elegant look by the new owners and there will be an excellent programme of lectures, events and exhibitions - click here to find out more.
The best antique and art dealers in Britain, and indeed the world, will be unveiling their finest objects for you. The carpets will be thicker, the lights will twinkle more gaily and in honour of all this I shall be taking with me my finest selection of canes and sticks, the highlight of which will be the Andalusia Riley Cane. Nestled within a fitted oaken case, this bejewelled presentation cane boasts a shagreen shaft with gold bands, a collar in 18 carat rose and yellow gold set with rose-cut diamonds and a translucent rhinoceros horn handle. This gorgeous item, retailed by the Queen Mother's jeweller, Carringtons of Regent Street, has hardly ever seen the light of day and is one of the grandest canes we have ever displayed.
To receive your tickets for the fair please click on the link below and enter your barcode number as shown. I look forward to greeting you all there.

Canes we will be displaying
Skull-cracker canes with decorative metal handles which are weighted for use in self-defence. |
Ivory canes crafted entirely from elephant ivory - presumably for posing and not for heavy support! |
Automaton head canes which either snap their jaws or raise their crest on the press of a button. |
The Adalusia Riley Cane |

 Embarassing Moment at the Checkout
We've all experienced it: the shrill bleep of the metal detector, that stony stare and the customs official's gesture for you to stand aside and join the Felons Queue as they prepare to give you an intimate search with their hand-held metal detector, prior to the full body search in the little back room.
Well, fear not - you are not alone. Hundreds of sword canes - yes, sword canes - are picked up by metal detectors at airport security every year, and invariably carried by folk who claim complete ignorance of the large blade in their cane. Please click here and enjoy this article on this very subject from the Wall Street Journal, entitled 'Raising Cane at Airport Security.'

Canes we are looking for...
 |
On behalf of clients we are actively seeking canes similar to the ones displayed. These canes are made from whalebone or narwhal, carved by sailors on whaling boats in the Nineteenth Century.
Many are of American origin and are often referred to as Scrimshaw work. Please email or phone me on (+44) 077 404 35844 if you have any similar items you would like to sell or exchange. |

My Third Leg
This summer, Woodrow Wilson House, Washington, is hosting an exhibition of President Woodrow Wilson's collection of over fifty canes entitled My Third Leg. President Wilson was noted for both wearing and using a cane due to a disability. This exhibition has many significant examples of both elaborate American folk art canes and historically significant presentation canes.
If you live near Washington or are planning to visit, then all is well. If not, click here to see some fine examples of what is on display at this exhibition.
