Amazing Magical Canes

We have all encountered that certain, mystery cane ... we know it is meant to do something and we just can't quite work it out!

The answer could be that it is a conjurer's or illusionist's cane. Many thanks to Mr Tony Share - former magician and a man who has spent many years as a dealer in antique canes - who gave us these examples from a catalogue from the 1940's: "Davenports Demon Series". Davenports had their shop in New Oxford Street and sold magic tricks and illusions to the public and to professional magicians.

Caricature canes of the notable and the notorious were to be found in many a Victorian gentleman's walking stick stand. It was a way of showing your political affiliations, who your favourite sportsmen were and, perhaps, if you were a Mozart or a Beethoven admirer. In fact, it was much the same as celebrity culture of today. Many of the faces are immediately recognizable; for instance, we would not have difficulty identifying a cane with an image of Napoleon on the handle. With others, however, time has dimmed their status and the once-famous have become the well-forgotten.

So, for our mystery cane competition, can you identify the gentleman on this cane with his swept over hair, "Dutch reform beard" and imposing features? A bottle of champagne goes to the first cane sleuth who comes up with the correct identification. Winner to be announced in the next newsletter.
